End Of Watch: 10.2.2025
It is with profound sadness that the Jones County Sheriff's Department announces the passing and End Of Watch of K9 Oblix today, Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the age of nine years.K9 Oblix has served valiantly with our department since March of 2018 and has been partnered with JCSD Sergeant/K9 Handler Derick Knight since January of 2020.
K9 Oblix is credited with seventeen felony apprehensions in the past 5 1/2 years, numerous tracks of felony suspects and missing persons, and dozens upon dozens upon dozens of illegal narcotics detections. K9 Oblix has earned the status of a "legend" in the law enforcement K9 community.
The loss of K9 Oblix, who suffered a terminal disease diagnosis in the past month, is both heartbreaking and devastating to every member of the Jones County Sheriff's Department and many, many others.
However, no one feels the loss more than K9 Oblix's partner Sergeant Derick Knight, his wife Joelle, and their daughters Kinsley and Anniston with whom K9 Oblix lived with every day for the last 5 1/2 years.
The bond between a K9 and his or her partner is difficult to explain. They work side by side for twelve hours each shift. They put their lives on the line on every shift and especially on every deployment. They work together, play together, eat together, and share a home together. Indeed, they become lifelong partners and family.
"Today we mourn the loss of K9 Oblix, a sworn Deputy Sheriff with the Jones County Sheriff's Department, who has slipped the bonds of this earthly life after eight years of courageous and relentless service to the residents of Jones County," notes Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin.
Sheriff Berlin closes by saying, "We extend our deepest condolences to Sergeant Derick Knight and his family, both blood and blue, in the loss of his partner K9 Oblix. May the memory of his amazing and courageous law enforcement service and his steadfast dedication be a comfort to everyone who worked with him and/or was associated with him. Godspeed Oblix!"
