On February 28, 2019 Jones County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Investigators spotted Antonio “Wop” Barnett, a fugitive with felony warrants, near Old Amy Road and Highway 15 North in Laurel. Barnett has an extensive criminal history and was thought to be carrying a weapon. Investigators attempted to make a traffic stop when Barnett accelerated and left the area.
Investigators pursued the suspect, not reaching high speeds, when the suspect approached a busy intersection on Highway 15 North, just south of 20thStreet. Barnett side-swiped two vehicles before he hit the side of a third vehicle occupied by two people who received injuries. They were transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
Barnett got out of his vehicle and fled on foot. He had a failed attempt of gaining access to another vehicle when he continued to run and was stopped with assistance from onlookers.
Barnett was taken into custody and charged with Felony Fleeing, Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Possession of Methamphetamine and a prior Felony Indictment. Additional charges are likely when he makes his initial appearance at Justice Court tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
