The K-9 Unit is under the direct supervision of Lieutenant George Dominguez. The fight against illegal drugs is a frustrating one. They have invaded our schools and workplaces and are generally an ever-present problem facing employers, parents and sadly children. The K-9 Unit of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department is helping to combat our ever present drug problem with 6 K-9’s on active duty.

Our K-9 Officers are multi-purpose dogs, they are able to track subjects who have fled a scene or who are lost. They also have the ability to search out and find illegal narcotics and are trained to detect the odor of controlled substances. Upon location of the odor of a controlled substance, the dog will alert to the smell. The dog is trained to come to a final response of scratching or sitting at the source of the odor. This is called a “passive” final response or active alert. This response may also indicate items recently contaminated with, or associated with, the odor of one or more of the controlled substances.  The K-9’s are trained to actively seek out drugs in all environments. The dogs are trained to indicate the presence of drugs no matter the quantity and to maintain that proficiency, they undergo maintenance training regularly.  The Sheriff's Department uses these K-9's in the everyday duties on patrol and can be called upon to assist any other division at the Sheriff's Department or another agency requesting assistance. The K-9 Division consists of one K-9 Officer per patrol shift with a total of 4 shifts. One K-9 Office is on Highway Interdiction and one is on Reserve.  This guarantees there is always a K-9 on duty to assist when needed. All Deputies and K-9's have gone through extensive training and are certified in all aspects of their duties.  In the event the handler becomes involved in an altercation with a perpetrator, the K-9 is trained to protect their handler.

We are very proud of our K-9 Unit.  They do an outstanding job in competition and on the highways and roads throughout Jones County.  We would also like to say Thank You to the people who have made donations to the K-9 Unit.  Without your help, we would not have the K-9 Unit that we have now.
